Madness in the Making
Sanity is madness put to good uses.
- George Santayana
March Madness is upon us. Sorting out which prospects should be selected where has been as fluid this season as any other time in NBA Draft history. There are varying feelings on how good this class will be, let alone opinions on who should be taken with the #1 Pick. The top players are interchangeable. Jabari Smith Jr. has taken advantage of the ambiguity, rising up to challenge Chet Holmgren and Paolo Banchero. Sophomore superstars Jaden Ivey and Johnny Davis are in nightly competition as to who is the best Guard. AJ Griffin has worked his way back from injury and looks the part of a potential Top 5 player. NBA Front Offices are just as undecided as fans and analysts are.
Now that the game is beginning to slow down for players that were struggling early on, now is an ideal part of the season for all of us to reevaluate where we have players on our Big Boards. For those that have kept up with my work you’ll know I’ve had three Big Boards posted thus far—ranking 100 prospects in my last two editions. With players figuring things out more as of late, I feel it’s necessary to dive into more film before I start assigning hard rankings for the remaining players. I’ve dove into over 150 players, but I feel the most confident in the Top 45 players thus far. That’s led to the creation of my Draft Profiles.
These profiles aren’t definitive either, but they are the most complete up to this point. These profiles will not include Kentucky Freshman, Shaedon Sharpe, even though I have evaluated some of his film. I’ll keep checking in on all of these prospects over time but my next bit of scouting will be on players 46 and on—and you can bet that more profiles will drop in the future. The deck may be reshuffled based on my findings and I’m very excited about that. The idea behind the profiles is multifaceted. For one, I want to have my notes public. I want to keep my scouting open to the public to share what I see and also to receive feedback from you all. I am also using them for future projects, such as a Draft Guide and to aid in my Big Boards. You can consider today’s piece to be a Big Board of sorts, I suppose, but I’d like to use this more so as a prospect Table of Contents. That being said, I present: Draft Profiles.
