Stephen G Hoops’ Top 80: 1.0
The Warmup
It is almost the end of the year, so why not extend out my Top 80 players so far this season. This will be in the First Person perspective—I believe my first one? It’s fitting because this is what’s in my head here in the early going. I cannot emphasize enough how difficult this exercise truly was; there are several players that are playing high quality hoops thus far, and it almost hurts where some of them fell. Since it is so early in the season (did I mention how early it is?), my opinion likely will and is allowed to change as more evidence is presented before me. Some players have gotten off to blistering-hot starts and have warranted their place among my rankings. I’ll be transparent in saying that some of them are going to get the BOTD from me based on where they were projected coming into the season, along with their playing time.
The Top 30 players will have a bit more flair and in-depth analysis than the players 31-60. I’ll also include a range of players known as the Outside 20 that I believe can project to be top Two-Way and/or Exhibit-10 candidates. Come for the top players, stay for the hopefuls.
The Top 30
#1. Paolo Banchero
Position: Forward | School/From: Duke | Age: 18 | Height: 6’10 | Weight: 250 lbs.
PPG: 17.8 | RPG: 7.3 | APG: 1.9 | FG%: 50.0 | 3P%: 33.3 | SPG: 1.4 | BPG: 0.5
Off %ILE: 81st | Def %ILE: 79th
Banchero has taken the world by storm in his recent play. With victories and dominant performances over Kentucky and Duke, he has risen among many boards to the top spot. His size, athleticism, and skill set are tailormade for the NBA. He uses his strength well, and has show the ability to take defenders off the bounce—off the bounce meaning taking it to the rim or a beautiful pull-up shot. His passing hasn’t been accentuated quiet as much as what some may have hoped, but at 1.9 Assists-Per-Game (APG) he is doing enough to show that there is something that he can build upon at the next level. Cramping is likely going to be one of the minor issues that gets brought up in evaluating Paolo, but overall he has demonstrated that he is the top player in this class.
#2. Jabari Smith Jr.
Position: Forward | School/From: Auburn | Age: 18 | Height: 6’9 | Weight: 205 lbs.
PPG: 16.3 | RPG: 7.0 | APG: 2.0 | FG%: 46.4 | 3P%: 43.3 | SPG: 1.5 | BPG: 1.0
Off %ILE: 86th | Def %ILE: 85th
Perhaps he has been a surprise to some, as there was only supposed to be two players in contention for the top two picks. Jabari came to challenge that narrative. Smith Jr. possesses a beautiful shot that has good timing and a nice, high release point. His defense has taken the world of college hoops by surprise, as he ranks in the 85th Percentile in overall defense according to Synergy. What’s truly mind-blowing—and it’s only 10 possessions—is that he is in the 100th Percentile in Isolation defense. That may regress a bit, but Jabari is real on that end. He’s shown the ability to handle the ball a bit, and even some solid passing chops. His frame suggests that he can become stronger as time moves on, which should only help his shot creation. The biggest questions moving forward are: Is his handle good enough to play adequately on the perimeter, and can he be more assertive or aggressive with the ball in his hands?
#3. Chet Holmgren
Position: Big | School/From: Gonzaga | Age: 19 | Height: 7’1 | Weight: 190 lbs.
PPG: 13.8 | RPG: 7.0 | APG: 2.5 | FG%: 71.0 | 3P%: 36.8 | SPG: 0.5 | BPG: 3.5
Off %ILE: 93rd | Def %ILE: 76th
Yes, Chet is skinny. We’ll move on. He is a tremendous shot blocker, and many analysts suggest that he could claim to be the best in his class. Playmaking is a huge skill that he uses more than what many had anticipated. Gonzaga has put Chet in places to where he can get a quick shot, or to where he can find teammates (like Drew Timme) in places to get an easy bucket. Obviously, Chet’s height-of-eye advantage can bend defenses in almost unfair ways. I’ll be referring to Holmgren as a “Venus Flytrap” as the season moves on due to the fact that opposing bigs seem comfortable trying to back him up to the basket, only to have their shot sent in reverse. Perhaps his biggest swing skill will be his shooting. He’s had games to where he’ll go two-of-four from distance, but then he’ll go zero-for-three his next game. If he can develop a respectable shot the “unicorniness” of Holmgren can reach another level. There are times to where Chet will end up on the floor during a play—but like Captain American, he can do that all day.
#4. Jaden Hardy
Position: Guard | School/From: Ignite | Age: 19 | Height: 6’4 | Weight: 185 lbs.
PPG: 17.0 | RPG: 5.4 | APG: 2.8 | FG%: 31.5 | 3P%: 25.9 | SPG: 1.1 | BPG: 1.6
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
Admittedly, Hardy isn’t performing to the level that many were expecting. With hopes (that still exist, by the way) of being a Top 3 pick, it’s been an adjustment for the young guard. We’ve seen this last year in the Ignite’s inaugural season that Jalen Green struggled in the early going to figure out how to play next to Jonathan Kuminga and Isaiah Todd. Hardy is in a similar situation, as Scoot Henderson, MarJon Beauchamp, Michael Foster Jr., and Dyson Daniels are all in hopes of being drafted some day. Hardy has sound passing instincts, which pairs nicely with his driving ability. His efficiency numbers are not anything to write home about, as he is at 31% overall from the floor. Those numbers will—I repeat, will—go up. He’s shown great shooting coming into the G League, and has not missed a single Free Throw attempt. His reputation prior to the year is why he’s still a Top 5 player in this year’s class, but he’ll be closely monitored as the season moves on.
#5. Jaden Ivey
Position: Guard | School/From: Purdue | Age: 19 | Height: 6’4 | Weight: 200 lbs.
PPG: 15.4 | RPG: 6.3 | APG: 3.9 | FG%: 52.0 | 3P%: 43.3 | SPG: 1.4 | BPG: 0.4
Off %ILE: 79th | Def %ILE: 15th
This is one player that has shocked me. Ivey’s growth last season has been proven undeniable thus far. He has had two quality test in the young season against North Carolina and Villanova. Both of those games were victories, largely due to outstanding play of the Sophomore. The outside shooting was the biggest concern in scouting Ivey this season, but he has done plenty to put those concerns aside. He’s averaging over 43% from downtown, and shot 40% in those two, previously mentioned games. Even when his shot isn’t falling, Ivey is finding open teammates and rebounding at a high clip. His defensive numbers don’t suggest that he has been impactful, but he has shown solid instincts on that end of the ball during big moments. Offensively, Ivey ranks in the 79th Percentile overall according to Synergy. Something I’m curious about is whether or not he can be a “lead guard”, but if he can effectively play as an off guard (a la, Jrue Holiday) he will give teams a solid return with his athleticism, passing, shooting and rebounding.
#6. Kendall Brown
Position: Wing | School/From: Baylor | Age: 18 | Height: 6’8 | Weight: 205 lbs.
PPG: 13.7 | RPG: 3.7 | APG: 2.3 | FG%: 71.9 | 3P%: 66.7 | SPG: 1.6 | BPG: 0.4
Off %ILE: 98th | Def %ILE: 86th
Just to make my thoughts on Brown perfectly clear, he seems to have the most clearly defined role out of all of the players that have proceeded him on the Board. I’m not a big fan of the term “architype’—mainly because I feel like it’s overused—but Kendall fits the mold of what every NBA team is looking for. A 3-and-D wing that has shown the ability to make plays and rebound, he has seemingly no true weakness in his game. That’s not suggest he’s perfect, as he would be much higher (and he could end up higher, by the way) if that was the case. He’s shooting over 66% from deep, but it’s on 4-of-6 shooting so how much can we truly feel secure in those numbers? Well, he is also shooting over 71% on his Free Throw attempts (10 for 14). I’m buying the shot for right now. Brown ranks in the 86th Percentile defensively, and in the 98th Percentile offensively according to Synergy. Brown may be the best “no wasted movements” player in this class, due to his off-ball activity. We’ll need to see consistency in his playmaking, as he followed up a 10 assist night with several one assist performances.
#7. Patrick Baldwin Jr
Position: Wing | School/From: Milwaukee | Age: 18 | Height: 6’10 | Weight: 220 lbs.
PPG: 15.3 | RPG: 8.3 | APG: 1.8 | FG%: 36.7 | 3P%: 25.0 | SPG: 1.0 | BPG: 1.0
Off %ILE: 38th | Def %ILE: 94th
Everyone knows that Patrick Baldwin Jr. turned down the opportunity to play for Duke for the chance to play for his father at UW-Milwaukee. While he could have been featured at other schools, he chose to face the uphill climb that has made his evaluation a bit more difficult. What isn’t difficult is to see is that he is a talented scorer. His shot is effortless and his range is at an NBA level already. Interestingly enough, “PBJ” is in the 94th Percentile on defense. Offensively, he is in the 38th Percentile overall. How do we sift through that? You have to contextualize the fact that his teammates aren’t at the level of most First Round prospects on this Board. That’s having an impact on his percentages, as he’s shooting 36.7% from the floor overall. I’d love to see even more consistency on the defensive end, despite what Synergy is saying right now, and more off ball movement. That being said, Baldwin Jr. is doing plenty to be taken Top 10.
#8. Jalen Duren
Position: Big | School/From: Memphis | Age: 17 | Height: 6’10 | Weight: 230 lbs.
PPG: 11.3 | RPG: 9.3 | APG: 0.8 | FG%: 64.1 | 3P%: 0.0 | SPG: 0.8 | BPG: 3.7
Off %ILE: 68th | Def %ILE: 68th
Duren will get knocked down a few pegs on some boards because he plays a position that is consistently thought to be the most replaceable on the court. He poses a big threat against that notion. Jalen is in the 68th Percentile defensively, but what’s incredible to note is that he is in the 90th Percentile against the Spot Up and in the 86th Percentile against Jump Shots. He is a very switchable big—a skill that is highly valuable at the next level for Centers. He is a dangerous lob threat, and is always in play for a put back off of an offensive rebound. He runs the floor incredibly well and boasts a Blocking Percentage of 14.8%. Duren isn’t showing much to suggest that he could become a floor spacer right now, but he is only 17. That’s not to suggest that he will become a respectable shooter, but we also shouldn’t rule it out. Looking at what he currently does that NBA teams do value, and how he is reminding people of Dwight Howard or Bam Adebayo, Duren is a player to watch moving forward as a Top 10 pick.
#9. Kennedy Chandler
Position: Guard | School/From: Tennessee | Age: 18 | Height: 6’1 | Weight: 172 lbs.
PPG: 14.3 | RPG: 2.8 | APG: 5.2 | FG%: 48.5 | 3P%: 50.0 | SPG: 2.7 | BPG: 0.8
Off %ILE: 75th | Def %ILE: 48th
I’m “breaking the rules” here by taking a short player so high, but sometimes game is game. Chandler has come onto the scene strong in the early going and is considered to be the best Point Guard by many. His ability to set up teammates is nothing short of special. He has an Assist Percentage over 29%, which goes to show that he is directly contributing to the success of his teammates. On over three attempts per game, he’s shooting over 50% from deep as well. Chandler has a quick first step that gives him the gravity you see in games that can lead to easy buckets for himself or others. He also does well enough on the other side of the ball, as Synergy has him in the 71st Percentile against guarding the Pick-and-Roll ball handler—a play that he’ll defend a lot in the NBA. His finishing around the rim needs to be a bit better but as he adds strength he should bump those numbers up.
#10. Caleb Houstan
Position: Wing | School/From: Michigan | Age: 18 | Height: 6’8 | Weight: 205 lbs.
PPG: 8.8 | RPG: 4.2 | APG: 1.8 | FG%: 34.7 | 3P%: 25.8 | SPG: 0.5 | BPG: 0.3
Off %ILE: 38th | Def %ILE: 7th
Houstan has struggled lately. He’s had poor shooting performances against Arizona and UNLV. He’s also has some good games too. Riding the wave as a shooter can be tricky, and it can be hard for fans to be forgiving when the shots don’t fall. The one thing I have faith in though is Houstan’s shot to return to form. His Free Throw percentage is almost at 85%, and his stroke is as consistent from the line as it is from deep in terms of mechanics. Even with the shot not being a major factor so far, his rebounding and passing has kept him playing meaningful minutes. He’s averaging over 4 Rebounds-Per-Game, and has shown some good instinct as a passer. I’m holding on to Houstan here because I’m willing to bet that his shot will turn around, which will open up the rest of his game beautifully.
#11. Hugo Besson
Position: Guard | Team: New Zealand | Age: 20 | Height: 6’3 | Weight: 196 lbs.
PPG: 19.5 | RPG: 4.3 | APG: 2.9 | FG%: 48.4 | 3P%: 36.5 | SPG: 1.0 | BPG: 0.2
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
*Stats are from last season as Besson’s season hasn’t started*
Hugo Besson is a French player that has been playing professional basketball overseas since 2017. He is now playing in the NBL with fellow NBA Draft hopeful, Ousmane Dieng. What makes Besson a lottery-level talent is his advanced ability to run an offense. Last season for Saint Quentin, Besson averaged over 19 Points-Per-Game (PPG) and shot over 36% from deep. Another incredible stat is that he had was an Assist Percentage of over 30%. He can be a bit turnover prone, but there is reason to believe that Hugo can be a very talented shot creator for himself and at the next level. He has sneaky athleticism, as he dunked over Zhou Qi (7’1) in a recent game. Defensively, he is competitive and has shown that he can fit well into his team’s scheme. It’s hard to know if he’ll get enough attention in the States but with the NBL on the rise, Besson’s name should be circulating more as the draft cycle continues.
#12. AJ Griffin
Position: Wing | School/From: Duke | Age: 18 | Height: 6’7 | Weight: 200 lbs.
PPG: 4.0 | RPG: 1.9 | APG: 0.4 | FG%: 44.8 | 3P%: 40.0 | SPG: 0.5 | BPG: 0.4
Off %ILE: 78th | Def %ILE: 19th
Griffin Jr. hasn’t had the start to the season anyone would have wanted. Duke received a lot of praise with the recruiting they pulled off, as they signed a top prospect in Paolo Banchero, along with Adrian Griffin Jr—who was also a consensus Top 10 player in his class. That being said, AJ suffered a knee injury in practice which is something that he’s dealt with as a high school player. Those injuries are a bit of concern and it causes Griffin to drop a bit (for now), from being a projected Top 5 player to a back-half-of-the-lottery player. Reading AJ Griffin’s game is a bit tricky as he’s not getting a ton of playing time. Against Gonzaga he only logged 6 minutes. He played 21 minutes against Lafayette, where he was 4-of-6 on threes and had 18 points. Time will tell how much he plays, but for now we’ll lean a little less on the current performance and a bit more on who he was billed to be.
#13. Harrison Ingram
Position: Forward | School/From: Stanford | Age: 18 | Height: 6’8 | Weight: 225 lbs.
PPG: 12.0 | RPG: 6.7 | APG: 3.4 | FG%: 42.0 | 3P%: 34.8 | SPG: 0.7 | BPG: 0.4
Off %ILE: 63rd | Def %ILE: 69th
Much like the previously mention Kendall Brown, Harrison Ingram has a clearly defined role at the next level, making him very valuable to me. Another 3-and-D prospect, there isn’t a team that wouldn’t love to add Ingram. Synergy grades his offense out in the 63rd Percentile, with him grading about Above Average or better in Spot Up and Cutting opportunities. They also grade his defense out in the 69th Percentile, with him showing to be a more than capable defended against Spot Up shooters and Pick-and-Roll ball handlers. Ingram also boasts an Assists Percentage over 23%, which indicates that he can be a connector for any team. There wasn’t much buzz surrounding Ingram coming into the season, but his output and build suggest he will be higher on boards the more games people get to see of him.
#14. Terrence Shannon Jr.
Position: Wing | School/From: Texas Tech | Age: 21 | Height: 6’6 | Weight: 206 lbs.
PPG: 16.3 | RPG: 1.0 | APG: 2.7 | FG%: 47.1 | 3P%: 50.0 | SPG: 1.7 | BPG: 0.3
Off %ILE: 90th | Def %ILE: 72nd
Admittedly, there is a lot of projection on this pick (what Big Board isn’t based on projection?) but I think there is sound reasoning behind it (or I wouldn’t have put him here, right?). Shannon took a big leap from his Freshman to Sophomore season, and has shown another step this year. He’s averaging over 16 PPG on 50% shooting from deep. That likely will decline over the year, but his shot is for real. He’s only played in three games this season due to injury, but he’s in the 90th Percentile in overall offense, and in the 72nd Percentile on defense. As a defender he’s only allowed five makes on thirteen attempts—adding to what Shannon showed last year. He’s off to a hot start and has enough athleticism to perform well at the next level. Probably the prospect with the highest fall factor in the Top 30 on my Board.
#15. Nikola Jovic
Position: Forward | Team: Mega Basket | Age: 18 | Height: 6’10 | Weight: 205 lbs.
PPG: 9.2 | RPG: 4.0 | APG: 3.2 | FG%: 40.5 | 3P%: 34.3 | SPG: 0.6 | BPG: 0.4
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
Nikola Jovic came into the season with a ton of buzz. The potential of a tall wing that can dribble, pass, and shoot is always in demand. Jovic hasn’t lived up to that hype thus far, but there are indicators that suggest that he’s starting to come into form. Since October 24th, Jovic is shooting 45% from distance and is averaging over 11 PPG and 4 APG. He has turned the ball over a bit more than I would like to see, but there is still plenty about Jovic to like moving forward. Nikola is a solid rebounder for his position as well, averaging 4 Rebounds-Per-Game (RPG). I’m hopeful (and confident) that Jovic has figured things out over his recent stretch, but will continue to monitor him.
#16. Dyson Daniels
Position: Perimeter | School/From: Ignite | Age: 18 | Height: 6’6 | Weight: 175 lbs.
PPG: 10.1 | RPG: 5.3 | APG: 4.1 | FG%: 46.0 | 3P%: 30.4 | SPG: 1.1 | BPG: 0.9
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
Dyson Daniels is on a team that looks to feature a few more players over him, but he has done an amazing job of being successful in his role. Defensively, he’s averaging one Block-Per-Game (BPG), and 0.9 Steals-Per-Game (SPG). The rate at which he gets a “Stock" is encouraging. His great length allows him to contest his position, as well as play passing lanes. On the offensive side he has an Assist Percentage over 22%. The big question is: Can he be a consistent shooter? That remains to be seen. He is shooting a modest 46% from the floor and 30% from deep. For what it’s worth, he’s made all three of his Free Throw attempts. His transition game is very good, which NBA teams could fall in love with.
#17. Roko Prkacin
Position: Forward | Team: Mega Basket | Age: 18 | Height: 6’10 | Weight: 205 lbs.
PPG: 9.4 | RPG: 6.0 | APG: 1.7 | FG%: 43.6 | 3P%: 29.6 | SPG: 0.6 | BPG: 0.1
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
There was a huge outcry from many among NBA Draft Twitter for Roko to enter the 2021 NBA Draft. They were ultimately let down, as Prkacin withdrew. Players bet on themselves quite often but Roko felt that he could go higher if he were to wait for this season. Much like Nikola Jovic, Prkacin hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations that were put on him through his nine games this season. Through the first four games, Roko shot over 37% from distance, but in his last four he’s only shot 11%. In his first four games he averaged over 14 PPG only to average just under 6 PPG in his last five—going scoreless in two of those outings. Even during this slump he has shown that he is a solid rebounder and passer for his position. I’m not willing to give up on the young Forward just yet, as he has shown that he can play out of slumps like this one before.
#18. Ousmane Dieng
Position: Wing | Team: New Zealand | Age: 18 | Height: 6’9 | Weight: 185 lbs.
PPG: 12.6 | RPG: 5.5 | APG: 2.7 | FG%: 33.7 | 3P%: 27.3 | SPG: 1.4 | BPG: 0.5
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
*Stats are from last season as Dieng’s season hasn’t started*
Ousmane left France to play alongside fellow countryman, Hugo Besson, in the NBL. Several recent picks have come from the NBL, and Dieng figures to continue the success of that league. In his preseason game for the Breakers, he recorded 19 points and 9 boards. His shot looks much improved from last season, where he only shot 27% from deep. He’s shown the ability to be a good distributor playing in France and that looks to continue in New Zealand. His reach allows him to contest his man well and be a nuisance in passing lanes. His handle seems tighter in the early going, which is something scouts will be looking at closely. He’s a good rebounder too, and his athleticism can create problems for opponents on the break. The NBL is a physical league and we’ll have to see how he holds up playing there, but given the success of LaMelo Ball and Josh Giddey, one can’t help but be optimistic that Dieng will be just fine adjusting to the style of play.
#19. Peyton Watson
Position: Forward | School/From: UCLA | Age: 18 | Height: 6’8 | Weight: 195 lbs.
PPG: 4.6 | RPG: 4.6 | APG: 1.1 | FG%: 34.1 | 3P%: 11.1 | SPG: 0.9 | BPG: 0.7
Off %ILE: 12th | Def %ILE: 58th
If I had to guess, Watson is likely to be the biggest climber between now and the next Big Board. He has a lot of physical traits that NBA teams love to see. The biggest problem for him has been playing time. UCLA struggled against Gonzaga (who doesn’t?), and Peyton has been on the bench for most of it. He played 16 minutes and missed all four of his shots. It’s frustrating to see such a highly regarded recruit not getting significant minutes. His Field Goal percentage is just over 34% and he’s only shooting 11% from deep. Defensively, Watson looks like he will be special in due time. In limited action he’s ranked in the 58th Percentile on that side of the floor. Although he’s an athletic standout, Watson’s current role isn’t doing him many favors. Hopefully we can see more of him going forward.
#20. Jean Montero
Position: Guard | School/From: Overtime | Age: 18 | Height: 6’2 | Weight: 170 lbs.
PPG: 13.2 | RPG: 4.4 | APG: 3.5 | FG%: 40.2 | 3P%: 26.0 | SPG: 1.8 | BPG: 0.1
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
*Stats are from last season due to Overtime stats being unavailable*
As it has been for most people, it’s been challenging for me to evaluate Montero relative to the talent around him. He isn’t going up against major universities, professional teams overseas, or even draft hopefuls in the G League. Instead he opted to play for an up-start league—one in which he is the biggest fish. To his credit he has played like the biggest fish, as he’s put up 40 point performances as well as the league’s first triple-double. The quality of competition is what makes his evaluation so difficult. It feels like AAU ball. The Overtime teams have even faced off against Prep schools. Before this becomes an expository piece on the Overtime league, Montero has shown solid ball handling skills and makes timely passes. Prior to joining OT, Montero did play professionally at Gran Canaria for two season. His scoring and passing held up well during his time there. His jump shot seems to be hit-and-miss, but he does have some gravity as a player. I’ll be keeping a close eye on him as the OTE season moves on.
#21. MarJon Beauchamp
Position: Perimeter | School/From: Ignite | Age: 20 | Height: 6’6 | Weight: 180 lbs.
PPG: 16.4 | RPG: 7.4 | APG: 1.9 | FG%: 57.3 | 3P%: 28.6 | SPG: 1.7 | BPG: 1.0
Off %ILE: N/A | Def %ILE: N/A
Beauchamp is doing a lot of things well for the Ignite this season and has proven to be one of their more consistent players. With Hardy struggling early, MarJon became a go-to scorer of sorts. His jumper is about the only thing that hasn’t been pretty, as he is shooting just under 29% from deep and only 60% from the line. He is a very strong player, who can contend well for rebounds (averages over 7 per game—over two on the offensive glass) and play sound defense. As I pointed out with Daniels earlier, Beauchamp is also averaging over 2.5 “Stocks” per game. His block and steal percentages are 2.5% and 2.3% respectively. He is a great finisher around the basket, which is why his True Shooting percentage is just a tick under 65% despite his poor shooting from distance. Averaging almost 16 PPG has been incredible, but I’m interested to see how that plays out now that Scoot Henderson is back and better than ever, and if Jaden Hardy can get things turned around. Nevertheless, MarJon is proving himself to be an NBA player in the early going.
#22. Bennedict Mathurin
Position: Wing | School/From: Arizona | Age: 19 | Height: 6’7 | Weight: 195 lbs.
PPG: 13.8 | RPG: 6.2 | APG: 1.5 | FG%: 41.2 | 3P%: 31.3 | SPG: 0.7 | BPG: 0.5
Off %ILE: 55th | Def %ILE: 88th
Mathurin figured to contend with Ivey as to who would be the best Sophomore in this year’s draft class. Ivey has run away with the lead thus far, but Bennedict has had a solid season in his own right. In Arizona’s biggest game of the season against Michigan, Mathurin was 7-of-13 from the floor, 2-of-5 from deep, and finished with 16 points. What’s hurting Mathurin is his overall shooting numbers. His Three Point percentage has fallen almost a full 10 percent, down to roughly 31%. It looks as if those numbers are on the rise, however. He is rebounding very well, evident in his rebounding percentage of 10.9%. What’s better is that Synergy has Mathurin in the 96th Percentile in defending the Pick-and-Roll—an area in which he was in the 71st Percentile the previous season. Last year, Bennedict was only in the 28th Percentile in guarding Spot Up opportunities. He’s up to the 71st Percentile in that category now. With his defense improving, Mathurin will need to increase his shot making and creation in order to rise on the Big Board 2.0.
#23. TyTy Washington Jr.
Position: Guard | School/From: Kentucky | Age: 19 | Height: 6’3 | Weight: 185 lbs.
PPG: 14.9 | RPG: 5.1 | APG: 2.9 | FG%: 47.2 | 3P%: 40.0 | SPG: 1.1 | BPG: 0.4
Off %ILE: 71st | Def %ILE: 78th
Too many people doubted TyTy after the opening night Kentucky had against Duke. Since then, the young Wildcat has been on a tear. In his last six games, Washington Jr. has shot over 45% from deep and is averaging two and a half APG. Kentucky has used him as a Spot Up player often, in which he ranks in the 75th Percentile. In the moments in which he runs a Pick-and-Roll, he is in the 52nd Percentile. Defensively he ranks in the 78th Percentile overall, and is proving to be a good on ball defender (68th Percentile guarding the Pick-and-Roll) and team defender (86th Percentile against the Spot Up). A theme that seems to be recycled with Kentucky guards is that it’s difficult to tell if they can be lead guards. Washington Jr. has shown so far that he can be effective on and off the ball.
#24. JD Davidson
Position: Guard | School/From: Alabama | Age: 19 | Height: 6’3 | Weight: 195 lbs.
PPG: 8.3 | RPG: 4.7 | APG: 4.9 | FG%: 54.1 | 3P%: 26.7 | SPG: 0.6 | BPG: 0.3
Off %ILE: 36th | Def %ILE: 39th
Davidson was widely regarded to be a First Round talent coming to Alabama this year. He hasn’t put up gaudy numbers, but the flashes of his talent have been there. He’s graded out as “Average” on both sides of the ball, per Synergy. He has good burst when he’s attacking the basket, and has good finishing ability due to being an athletic standout. Although his shot hasn’t been there for much of the season (almost 27% on threes), he boasts a 54% Field Goal percentage. He also has a Assist Percentage of 29.4%. He’ll have to figure out his shooting but JD looks like an NBA level guard thus far, with his transition game and physical attributes being the main reasons why.
#25. Ochai Agbaji
Position: Wing | School/From: Kansas | Age: 21 | Height: 6’5 | Weight: 215 lbs.
PPG: 22.5 | RPG: 3.5 | APG: 1.7 | FG%: 55.3 | 3P%: 41.7 | SPG: 1.0 | BPG: 0.2
Off %ILE: 94th | Def %ILE: 84th
Agbaji is having a career season in his farewell tour for the Jayhawks. His putting up career scoring numbers (22.5 PPG), career efficiency numbers (55.3 FG%; 41.7 3P%; 63.8 2P%), while having his lowest turnover percentage of his career (an incredible 4.6%). To put this in a layman’s perspective: He’s doing the most he’s ever done and looking good doing it. He has yet to have a game in which he finished under 50% from the floor, or a game in which he had more turnovers than assists. If there was a weakness in his game—other than age if you practice ageism (gross)—is that he’s “only” in the 51st Percentile on covering the Pick-and-Roll, which grades out as average. I would hope that the 93rd Percentile he ranks on offense more than “makes up” for it. Agbaji also ranks in the 94th Percentile in guarding Spot Up shooters. Ochai has the potential to rise even more on the next Board, as long as continue to put up these Player of the Year type numbers.
#26. Mark Williams
Position: Big | School/From: Duke | Age: 19 | Height: 7” | Weight: 242 lbs.
PPG: 9.6 | RPG: 6.5 | APG: 0.9 | FG%: 63.6 | 3P%: 0.0 | SPG: 0.8 | BPG: 3.0
Off %ILE: 94th | Def %ILE: 74th
Williams has shown a lot to improve his draft stock in the early going. Sure he’s not a jump shooter on offense, but he is a great dive man and can make excellent cuts to the rim (he averages 1.75 Points-Per-Possession on Cuts). On defense, he’s one of the best rim deterrents in the nation. He holds a Block Percentage of 15.9%. One of the biggest debates when it comes to draft philosophies is how high do you draft a Center? I’d argue I’d have a case-by-case stance, but if you can locked up a athletic, rim-running, shot-blocking Center for 4+ years, you’ve done a fine job. Williams plays the ideal role for NBA bigs, and may be able to improve in other areas over time. He’s clearly a 1st Round talent in my eyes.
#27. Max Christie
Position: Wing | School/From: Michigan St. | Age: 18 | Height: 6’6 | Weight: 190 lbs.
PPG: 7.9 | RPG: 3.3 | APG: 1.6 | FG%: 33.3 | 3P%: 25.9 | SPG: 0.7 | BPG: 0.3
Off %ILE: 37th | Def %ILE: 42nd
Christie is in a similar situation that a lot of Freshmen are in this year, which is playing for a super-talented team. This sounds like an ideal place to be in, but Christie isn’t necessarily “featured” on the Spartans. Instea, he’sd a cog in the machine. What hurts his case even more is that in his last two big matchups (UConn & Baylor), he was basically a non-factor. He finished 1-of-9 against UConn, a game in which his team won by four. Against Baylor—a game in which he’d be scouted against Kendall Brown—he finished 2-of-6. Billed as a shooter, he was only 1-of 7 from deep in those two contests combined. All things considered, he’s still done enough to not be a complete negative. He’s in the 82nd Percentile defending Spot Ups, and he’s only allowed 3 points from Isolation plays—albeit it’s been only a 8 possession sample. He’s shown the ability to be a good off-ball player, and has even flashed some solid live-dribble passing. Christie feels safe to me here, as I could really see him go in either direction going forward.
#28. Keegan Murray
Position: Forward | School/From: Iowa | Age: 21 | Height: 6’8 | Weight: 215 lbs.
PPG: 24.6 | RPG: 8.9 | APG: 1.6 | FG%: 61.2 | 3P%: 34.5 | SPG: 1.1 | BPG: 2.3
Off %ILE: 98th | Def %ILE: 7th
It’s been a tough ask for Keegan Murray to follow up Luka Garza’s farewell season, but he has handled it beautifully. I’ve written about him earlier in the year and, selfishly, wish I had him a bit higher. He is very versatile offensively, as he has one of the best inside-out games in the country. His Three Point shooting has gone down as of late but Murray remains a threat, as he’s about 35% from distance. His Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a ridiculous 49.7. Defensively, Keegan is averaging 2.3 BPG. His overall defensive rating on Synergy is an alarming (and seemingly unbelievable) 7th Percentile grade. I’m not sure how that can be, but it is. Murray can do a number of things well, and seems to fit the role of an NBA “Four”.
#29. Tyrese Hunter
Position: Guard | School/From: Iowa St. | Age: 17 | Height: 6’1 | Weight: 178 lbs.
PPG: 13.2 | RPG: 3.7 | APG: 5.2 | FG%: 37.0 | 3P%: 28.6 | SPG: 3.2 | BPG: 0.2
Off %ILE: 31st | Def %ILE: 89th
Tyrese Hunter has bursted on to the draft scene in tremendous fashion. In many circles, he is ranked only behind Kennedy Chandler as “PG1”. Obviously I’m not there on him—yet—but he has captured my attention. Hunter “only” grades out as “Average” on offense, per Synergy, but his 33.5% Assist Percentage shows that his involvement in the offense is paramount for Iowa State’s success. He also takes decent care of the basketball for his age and role. Defensively, Tyrese is a menace. He’s averaging 3.2 Steals-Per-Game (SPG), and has a Steal Percentage of 6%. Synergy has him in the 86th Percentile defending Spot Ups, and in the 68th Percentile guarding Pick-and-Rolls. He has to be more efficient in terms of scoring, as he has Field Goal Percentage of 37% and a Three Point Percentage of 28.6%. Given how young he is, I’m very intrigued to see how much he grows with the Cyclones, and even more interested to see if he decides to go pro.
#30. Trevor Keels
Position: Perimeter | School/From: Duke | Age: 18 | Height: 6’5 | Weight: 210 lbs.
PPG: 11.9 | RPG: 3.6 | APG: 3.3 | FG%: 35.9 | 3P%: 30.2 | SPG: 2.1 | BPG: 0.0
Off %ILE: 39th | Def %ILE: 61st
This feels like a player placement that shouldn’t be what it is. Keels looks the part of an NBA player. He’s got the size and build that most teams would love to have. He’s a solid athlete and has shown flashes of a next-level Guard. Maybe it’s his role and the pecking order of Duke, but he hasn’t been super efficient. His Field Gold Percentage is 37.5% and he’s shooting just over 30% from deep. I believe those numbers will come around. He is doing a great job on the defensive end, as he ranks in the 92nd Percentile defending the Pick-and-Roll. He averages 2.1 SPG and has a Steals Percentage of 3.7%. In an offense in which there are multiple decision makers, Keels have an Assist Percentage of 15.6%, which is a respectable number. Keels feels (haha) like the type of player that will turn things around and rise up the board.
